Scientific title | Randomised trial of hip fractures treated with two different types of hip replacements |
Study hypothesis | The aim of this study is to undertake a randomised controlled trial comparing two currently used types of hemiarthroplasties (hip replacements) that are used for the treatment of hip fractures. The aim is to determine if any notable and relevant difference exist between the two designs. |

Participant inclusion criteria | 1. Aged over 49 years old 2. Acute admission to Peterborough District Hospital with a hip fracture |
Participant exclusion criteria | 1. Patients being treated conservatively 2. Patients having surgery under local anaesthesia 3. Patients who have a preference for one form of anaesthesia 4. Patients (or their next of kin) unable or unwilling to give written informed consent 5. Patients in which either the attending surgeon or anaesthetist feels one method of anaesthesia has preference over the other |
